5) Lords Prayer Symbols

Dear Amy,
How about..
a) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
- use a halo
b) Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Heaven - a fluffy white cloud
c) "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against
us"
(need symbol for forgiveness or sins, ) use a picture of a dustbin
(garbage can) with the word Sin (on a box) sticking out the top
d) "lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil" (need symbol
for temptation or evil) - a pair of horns - a bit like the headgear you
see on Halloween
e) need symbol for "glory" (God's glory) - a trophy
f) need symbol for "forever"  - how about the mathematical symbol for
infinity (an eight on its side)
g) need symbol for "Amen" - simply the word its self - or the thumbs up
already
suggested.

Good Luck with this. It sounds like a great idea.
Liz

6) Paper Shredder Object Lesson

Theme: Turning your sins over to God.

Object: a paper shredder, 3 papers with the word SIN in big bold letters,
and a paper with Forgiveness in big bold letters.

No matter who we are or how old we are, we all have sin in our lives.
Discussion with the children about what sin is.  I asked for 2 volunteers
and gave each a paper with SIN written on it.  They held up their signs so
everyone could see they had sin.  I then explained that God will take away
their SIN, all they need to do is hand it over.  At this point, I put my
SIN paper into the shredder, explaining God takes my sin, just like the
shedder takes the paper.  In fact I explained how hard it is to get the
SIN back by pulling on the paper which continues to get eaten by the
shredder.  Next I invite the two volunteers to give God their sin by
putting the paper into the shredder.  One child held the paper way up
high, the other held it over his face.  I missed the opportunity, but wish
I had mentioned that some people hide behind their sin while others admit
to their sin more easily.

After all the SIN papers had been shredded, I pulled out the FORGIVEN
paper from the shredder basket explaining that God will gladly accept your
sin, shred it, and return forgiveness to us.

Enjoy,
Rich Miller

7) Icebreaker

My husband and I opened every Sunday school class the same way. We had 2
and 3 year olds and we knew the main thing that we wanted to happen every
week is that each of us would interact with each of them individually. The
kids would come sit in a circle and he would quite gregariously go around
room announcing he would be handing out tickets to go anywhere in the
world. He then would go around the room and ask the child's name and where
they'd like to go today. He would name some outlandish price and there
would be a pretend exchange of money and a ticket. After they bought their
ticket, they'd come to see me and I would help them check in on the
attendance board and say a kind word to them individually. The kids
listened intently to where the other kids were going. Some looked forward
to making up something new every week others went the same place every
week.

8) Lord's Prayer Symbols

> Please help! I am drawing a brain-blank for symbols to help us with these
> parts of the prayer (please bear with me if you use a different version of
> the prayer):

> a) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. (Need a symbol for
> "hallowed" or "holy" to help us remember that God is holy.)

The first symbol that popped into my mind when I read this was an artist's
palette (art)! I know that is not what you meant, but had to share as it
made me smile. I
think a throne on some clouds would be good.

> b) Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. (may
> use symbol of crown for kingdom, but may add earth and heaven
> symbol...what would you use for "heaven"?)

Heaven symbol could be clouds or stars above the earth. The crown is a
good
choice.

> c) "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us"
> (need symbol for forgiveness or sins, would prefer to focus on the
> forgiveness element...was thinking of a heart or the cross but not sure if
> that will help the kids remember?)

A scarlet heart and a white heart ("Though your sins be as scarlet, they
shall be whiter than snow." Isaiah 1:18)

> d) "lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil" (need symbol
> for temptation or evil)

Shepard's crook

> e) need symbol for "glory" (God's glory)

Sun with rays or cloud with rays coming down

> f) need symbol for "forever"

Sign for infinity (figure 8 on it's side)

> g) need symbol for "Amen"

I like the thumbs up idea.

9) Mascot Swap Penpals

> Mascot swap is like penpals but with a mascot and we wrote
> as a group and sent pictures, crafts and a dvd etc,
> Reesesamzclub@googlemail.com

This sounds like a wonderful idea to fellowship with kids from other
places!
I remember having a penpal of Japan when I was a kid.
I wanted to try to find someone to trade with as well.  I live in the US,
and my kids are preteen.  If you would like to do this please contact me @
pearlynchrist@people.com.

--from SSTN: there are others in the newtork who have wanted to be part of
a penpal group. By typing "penpal" into the archives search box you can
locate them:

Adair, please contact me --
