1) R E S P E C T
I need to teach a group of 5 year olds to show respect to adults as well
as to each other. I would love a story, craft or game that could tie in
with this important lesson. I will be doing this class in a week. Any
ideas?
--from SSTN:
Lesson: Use the golden rule verse as your Scripture: "Do unto others what
you would have them do unto you." Matthew 7:12
Then, explain that RESPECT means to show courteous and kind treatment
to others, and this is how we can show it:
R - is for REMEMBER that God gives you parents and teachers to tell you
about him.
E- is for EVERYONE will be happier when we behave well.
S- is for SITTING still during a lesson.
P- is for PAYING attention to your teacher.
E- is for ENJOY learning new things about God.
C- is for CARING for one another.
T- is for THANKING. Thank your teachers for their time in teaching you.
Craft: Have the children make extra large letters (even as big as they
are) using colorful fabrics, or coloring them in with crayons, glitter,
markers, puff paint, etc. Place photos of the kids, teachers, pastors,
parents, onto the letters and hang them in class as a reminder to show
R-E-S-P-E-C-T to one another.
If you use this idea...please send pictures and I'll place them into the
Bulletin Boards section at: ChristianCrafters.Com
(You could even play Aretha Franklin's RESPECT song during class....just
kidding! :o)) YSIC, Sarah K.)

2) Good Samaritan Craft
I thought I would share a craft idea that I am using for my SS class of
2-3 yr olds. To reinforce the idea of loving your neighbor as the good
Samaritan did, each child will make two dyed noodle necklaces/ bracelets.
One for themselves and one to give to "a neighbor." Due to the age of the
children I will be explaining we can only give one away to a person their
parents say it is okay to do, and will send a note to the parents about
it.
What I would like to share now, is tips I learned about dyeing pasta for
crafts that some (like me) have learned the hard way. First, WEAR
disposable gloves-- currently my fingers are all colors and I have a party
I am hosting tonight. Second, most of the information I had seen about
dyeing pasta said use a few drop of food color added to rubbing alcohol--
it takes a lot more than a few drops if you want vibrant color-which all
kids want. Finally, it is fun so enjoy, but wear gloves!!
Thank you, Sarah, for this wonderful board that has saved my sanity so
many times with the wonderful ideas everyone has shared. It is truly a
blessing. Gloria in Yorktown, VA

4) Sailboat salads
>I was wondering if you would have any craft ideas on how to make a sail
boat? <<<
This is more of an edible craft, but it might work. They would make good
centerpieces. I got it out of a Quick Cooking cookbook. Here's the recipe:
Sailboat salads
1 pkg.(3 ounces) berry blue gelatin
1 cup boiling water
1 cup cold water
1 can (29 ounces) peach halves, drained
4 toothpicks
2 thick slices process American cheese
2 cups torn lettuce
Place gelatin in a bowl;add boiling water and stir until gelatin is
dissolved. Stir in cold water. Por gelatin into four salad
plates;refrigerate until firm. For boat, place a peach half, cut side up ,
in the center of each plate( refrigerate any remaining peaches for another
use). Cut cheese slices in half diagonally. for sail, carefully insert a
toothpick into the top center of each cheese triangle. Bend cheese
slightly; push toothpick through bottom center of cheese. Insert toothpick
into edge of peach. Arrange lettuce around plate. Yield: 4 servings.

5) Bird Life in Wingdom
> I would like to know where I can get a copy
Actually, the book is "Birdlife in Wington", by Calvin Reid, who also
wrote "Parables from Nature". I remember hearing the stories from these
books when I was in Jr. church, over 40 years ago, and I loved them! I
have very old copies of both, and they were published by Wm. B. Eerdmans
Publishing Co., in Grand Rapids, MI. I believe Eerdmans is still in
business. I hope you can find them, but if they are indeed out of print,
and you can get permission to copy, I'll try to scan them, or just copy
and send them to you. Blessings, Kit MacLeod, North Palm Beach, FL

6) Tune to a spiritual?
Does anyone have the tune to a spiritual whose words are
"Somebody prayed for me
They had me on their mind
They sacrificed their time to pray.
They had no doubt
That God would work things out
I'm so glad somebody prayed for me."
Thank you. God bless, Jane
<>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <><
7) Power Up With Jesus?
Greetings in the name of Jesus! I need some ideas for our VBS which has
been scheduled for June 4th. The theme is Power Up With Jesus. Scripture
is Acts 1:8 "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come
upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all
Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
Looking for a craft idea that will teach the children about the Holy
Ghost in particular, however, any ideas will be helpful at such a late
date. Thank you in advance, Ahreita Griffin-Charlotte, NC

8) Igloo from plastic gallon jugs
Supplies: Gallon milk jugs (washed, with lids removed. Amount depends on
size. For a life-sized igloo, it will take over 200 jugs). Wire or rope,
Duct tape (hot glue may be used, tape holds best) Get the diagram of the
igloo at:
http://christiancrafters.com/igloo.jpg
String 25 (or more) jugs together loosely (by the handles). This will be
the base, so adjust I to the size you desire. Lay the jugs in a circle,
leaving a 2' wide opening for the door. Run strips of duct tape across
the tops of the jugs to hold them in place.
Make loops of duct tape and attach the second layer of jugs to the first.
Run the wire or rope through the handles. Continue adding layers of jugs,
each layer smaller than the previous layer. When you have reached the
desired height for the door opening, the next layer of jugs will go in a
complete circle.
By Teresa Bohannon
Other Igloo Ideas:
Use a dome shaped tent and cover with a white sheet. Gather 1/2 inch to 2
inch thick styrofoam (you need all the same thickness). Many businesses
receive merchandise packed in foam, ask for donations. Cut the foam in
blocks and glue to the sheet or tent. By Teresa Bohannon
*** The Mailbox Magazine, in a past issue) has instructions for a Milk Jug
Igloo slightly different than mine. I cannot find my copy, but believe it
was in the Winter 1999 issue.

9) Snow globe ideas
Add a few drops of glycerin to the water and it will keep the water fresh
and keep the stuff from clumping. You can purchase glycerin at the
Pharmacy. You can use oil (baby or mineral) but it will separate from the
water, glycerin won't. ALSO be sure you are using glitter that is
waterproof.

10) Pastor Appreciation
As a pastors wife, one of the most cherished gifts we have received was a
book the children made (one for each of us). Each child was given a sheet
of manila construction paper. The teachers said "complete this sentence:
I appreciate (love) my pastors wife because..." then they drew a picture.
Holes were punched in each and they bound the book with ribbon. Some of
the comments were" because she teaches us about Jesus, because she loves
Jesus, because she is a true Christian in word and actions." Made me cry!
You could do the same thing with squares of fabric and fabric markers or
crayons. Get someone to sew the squares together and quilt them, or let
the kids tie (tack) the quilt.
It is always special when one of the children make a presentation. They
have given us gift certificates to our favorite restaurant, mall gift
certificates, all kinds of gifts. There is a place in Kingston, TN called
"Whitestone." It is a Bed and Breakfast place, and pastors stay 1/2 price
during the week. The owners built it as a haven for pastors and their
wives. It is the nicest place we have ever stayed. Send your pastor there
if you want to really bless him! Teresa -Faith Tabernacle UPC-La Marque,

11) Pastor's appreciation day
IF THE THEME IS HERITAGE, TEACH YOUR STUDENTS HOW CIRCUIT PREACHERS WERE
TREATED. THE OLD TIME WAY TO WELCOME AND APPRECIATE A PREACHER WAS A
POUNDING. HAVE YOUR KIDS BRING IN A POUND OF SOMETHING LIKE
SUGAR,FLOUR,MACARONI,ETC. hAVE YOUR CLASS WRITE A POUND OF APPRECIATIONS
AND GIVE THEM TO YOUR PASTOR.
