1) Present/tardy or absent?
Dear Sarah: I would like to know how other Sunday school ministries deal
with an attendance issue. At what point in the Sunday school hour does the
teacher stop marking late students? Example: If class is from 9: 00 -
10:00 AM and a student enters the classroom at 9:50 is he/she
present/tardy or absent for the whole class?
Your input will be greatly appreciated. Keep doing a great work.
Bless Your Spirit. Rev. Matthew Yarbrough, Jr.
--from SSTN: We take attendance at the beginning of class, and at some
point during the class one of the deacons picks up the count and collects
the money. If someone comes in after that, they aren't counted. We've
never tracked someone being tardied. Thanks for your encouraging words!
Sarah.

2) Adult VBS - Truth Trackers in Search of the Stone Tablets
Cathy, this week our teens and company (some adult volunteers) are
teaching Truth Trackers to Pre-School through Sixth Grade. Sherry
Stashcke is leading our "Craft Bazaar" Caravan Site with her teen son,
Scott. The crafts Sherry has planned are of a level they can be used with
Adult Classes to re-enforce the lessons as well and most are "keepers" to
be reminders on a small shelf or knick-knack cabinet. They are using the
following crafts:
HONOR GOD - Flower Pots - these are the 1" clay pots that the students
decorate by gluing beads, buttons, sequins (circles, shells, etc) on the
outside. Then they "plant" a flower -- construction paper on a chenille
stem in the pot (Daniel - King Darius - God). To the center of the flower
is glued the "Secret Window" message.
HONOR FAMILY - Sand Paintings - 2-3" high bottles with screw on caps -
these are layers of various colors of sand (Joseph's Coat) and the caps
are glued on so painting isn't lost. To the outside of the bottle is
glued the "Secret Window" message.
RESPECT LIFE - Arrow - colorful arrow (Jonathan & David) made with Fun
Foam pieces glued together and a heart hanging from its shaft on which is
written the Secret Window message.
RESPECT OTHERS - Tree Branch - these are two toilet paper rolls through
which is a twig or dowel and string tied to each end for a "swing" for a
paper Zaccheus to sit on. He can be colored or decorated with glued on
clothes, hair, etc. On the tree branch is glued the "Secret Window"
message.
TRUTH REVEALED - Stone Tablet - these are made from brown lunch bags
squished and rounded at top for the stone tablet look and then the "Secret
Window" message written in center. Inside is THE TRUTH of Jesus being the
true way.
Praying for a successful VBS!

3) Continuous Curriculum
Thanks Sarah for such an informative website. I have a query, which I
hope someone out there can help me with. Our Education committee have
decided that they like the idea of all the church family using the same
teaching material, from infants to adults, with the children’s sermon
being the starting point for what follows in Sunday school, followed by
the adult’s sermon. Does anyone use or know of a good “all age worship”
material then please let me know. Please email me on DL6970@hotmail.com
with details. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again. Lynne

4) Preschool Sunday school class - help needed
Karyn Henley publishes Children's Ministry Folders that are excellent.
They follow the format that Sarah recommended with one folder following a
theme for a month and having enough ideas for four weeks. She has four
stories, games, crafts, science lessons, snacks, and songs with one memory
verse for the unit. They are very age appropriate and very affordable. I
just looked on her website (www.karynhenley.com) and the folders are going
out of publication. If you want them, you'd better hurry.

5) Pastor Appreciation
I do the children's sermon in our church. This one was for Pastor
Appreciation Sunday. I ask the children what they thought Pastor's job is.
Then we talked about what kind of person he is. We decided he was a man of
godly character, which meant he had the characteristics of God. He is
filled with the fruit of the spirit. That means that I can tell he has
God's spirit in him by the way that he lives. (We had given pastor a
decorated gift bag before the sermon started. At this point one of the
children placed a bag of dried fruit into the gift bag) I stated that this
fruit reminded me that God's Spirit produces fruit in Pastor so he would
be effective and productive in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. I then
stated that Pastor was a nut. By that i meant he had a joyful spirit. He
likes to laugh and have fun. He enjoys life. (Another child placed a bag
of cashews (his favorite) into the gift bag. Meaning no disrespect, I
believe that Pastor is a great nut, the very best God could send us.Then
we talked about the things Pastor does. Pastor preaches.(Another child
placed a bag of Scripture mints into the bag) I stated that the Word of
God is sweet to those who want to live the way God wants us to. Pastor
teaches. In Bible study we can ask questions and gain understanding of
God's Word. (Another child placed a 1 gallon plastic water jug into the
bag) I stated that this was to remind Pastor that God uses him to give us
the water of the word when we are dry and thirsty. Pastor spends a lot of
time in his car going to meetings visiting people at hom eor in the
hospitals.(another child placed a little booklet and a pen so he could
keep track of his mileage). (Another child placed a small container of
anointing oil in the bag)
I stated that Pastor prays for the people of the church and on Sundays he
anoints and prays for those who are sick among us. There are also some
things he does to relax. He loves to sing. (Another child placed a
cassette of music into the bag) I stated that
Pastor could relax while he was traveling around and listen to the music.
Her also likes to fish. (Another child put in some fishing supplies)I also
stated that nothing would thrill Pastor more than for them to become
fishers of men. I then prayed with the children and presented them with a
bag of gummi worms to remind them to become fishers of men. Kitty

6) Bulletin Board idea?
I am needing a Bulletin Board idea for the month of July. Any ideas? Tks
--from SSTN: for all the USA SSTN subscribers: What about a red, white,
and blue theme? July 4th-- streamers, flags, and pictures of some of the
great men who established our nation, along with the prayers they offered
up to God, and their declarations. Check out "July 4th-Is this Really
Independence Day?", in the sermons section at: ChristianCrafters.com

7) Craft for Halloween
> I know it's early but I'm trying to get organized and ahead before
> September. Last year I had a hard time coming up with a craft for
I remember my mom for a craft would get smaller pumpkins and have the
children carve them with Christian symbols. (Cross, Fish and many others).
On Halloween it seemed to be a great way to witness many people would
comment on the pumpkins leaving a open door of opportunity. Brenda

8) Prayer Acronym
I haven't seen an acronym for Prayer, but I have for PRAY,
P - Praise - God for the good he's done for me
R - Repent - for the wrong I've done
A - Ask - then bring our new requests/desires
Y - Yield - His will be done, not ours.

9) Craft for Halloween
I think I may have seen this idea here earlier, but it is a good Halloween
visual for kids.
Take them outside & let them help clean the seeds out of the pumpkin (or
just watch if during Sunday school & they can't get dirty). Explain that
when you give your life to God, he cleans you out on the inside just like
you are cleaning out the pumpkin. When you put the light inside the
pumpkin, explain how people are able to see God shining in you just as you
see the light shining in the pumpkin. You get the idea.

10) Celebrating Halloween...why?
I'm not sure I understand why your Church or Sunday School
class/cirriculum would include anything that has to do with Halloween.
Halloween is all about death and supernatural. Makes no sense to me. Can
you help me understand?
<>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <><
11) Craft Curriculum?
I'd like to know if anyone knows of a Christian crafts curriculum for
children? Is there a curriculum for kids where the lessons are taught
using a craft each week - just a short 30 minute lesson type thing that
would work for grades 1-6?
--from SSTN: absolutely, the 'Kids Time Kit' in my curriculum section is
coordinated for the church year and includes, crafts, games, lessons, and
songs for each lesson. One complete years worth for grades 1-6.

12) Craft for Halloween
Last year, at my church booth, I created a board of the veggie tale
characters (i.e., Bob the tomato). The children were given a colored
piece of paper which was Bob's nose to pin on the board with a piece of
invisible tape on the back. Winners received gifts (an array of small
toys, puzzles, bracelets, rings, etc.) and participates received a piece
of candy just for trying. I had an age limit of 2-9 years old as this
was not a challenge for the older youth.
