1) Clever Discipline technique
I have a group of 5th and 6th graders this year that were totally
disruptive. It was to the point that I wanted to quit teaching entirely,
because we couldn't get anything done. I tried a lot of different things
but the thing that finally did the trick was to bring a video camera to
class. All I did was put it on a tripod and aimed it toward the class.
They asked why they were being taped and I told them that I assumed they
were so proud of their behavior, that they wold want their parents to see
it too. It was like flipping a switch and they have been model students
ever since. I'm not sure how it would work for younger children, but this
group of kids knew how unacceptable their behavior was and itworked like a
charm. We have had 6 great weeks in a row, got through all of the lesson
and had time to work on a project.

2) Hospitalized boy...internet resources
This is in response to June who asked for ideas to occupy a 9 year old boy
who is hospitalized. Many hospitals offer access to videos and computer
games. If he's allowed on the internet I have found 3 great entertaining
Christian sites for kids.
One is http://www.toyboxtales.com/index.html. It's is a children's
pastor's site who has made all these very funny videos using action
figures to tell story's and parables from the Bible. You can download
them for free and they are really funny. I think any elementary age boy
would love them! There are lots of them and they all teach great
lessons.
The second is http://www.whitsend.org/imagine/index.html. Here kids can
play battleship, connect 4, and some other games.
The third is http://www.kingscall.org/ a fun interactive online adventure
game.
If he had access to a laptop computer with internet, he could play these
while in his bed. They are very entertaining and make the time pass!

3) Hospitalized boy
For ideas to send the little boy facing a long hospital stay, I would
suggest Bible related CDs and/or tapes such as Adventures in Odyssey (by
Focus on the Family). These come in sets that are often a theme and they
do a fantastic job of keeping a child's attention (adults too!). Yes,
they may seem a little pricey but they are worth every single cent! Some
of the Adventures include "travel" for actual Bible story re-enactment
that are excellent. There's also The Donut Man, Psalty, You Are There,
etc. There are other terrific Bible-related song tapes or CDs out there
-- (e.g., Hallelujah Hop was a favorite of my daughter). If there is a
video player in the hospital TV, the Nest Entertainment Bible story videos
are the best animated Bible stories on the market (my opinion). Veggie
Tales are loved by all ages.
Perhaps the class could bring money to go in together for some of these
items to send to the boy every week or so. Or if some of the children own
them, perhaps they could share them or give them (as long as they are in
good shape or gently used). If your church library or children's library
has these things perhaps they could be checked out for him. Perhaps a
fundraiser could be held to raise funds for these things or request
donations of these items. Or a gift certificate to a Christian bookstore
for the parents.
Lastly, good child appropriate Bible-related stories could be read to him.
Also, ask other parents with children this age.
My heart goes out to the boy and his family. I hope some of the ideas are
helpful.

4) Autistic boy?
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or resources that we could use to
reach an autistic boy that is in our church. He is a real sweetheart, 6
years old.
He has been tested at school and his reading comprehension is way above
grade level-kindergarten. He is hard of hearing and his eyesight is not
good. He will not sit unless he is watching his little handheld CD
machine that shows cartoons etc. He is
extememly mecanical. Our church is very small and he usually goes to the
nursery to just do puzzles or play with the trucks. Does anyone know of a
Christian resourse for dvd's of cd's that we could put in his little box.
He won't interact very much or listen while you try to read to him. Any
suggestions would be appreciated-

5) Hospitalized boy...books on tape
Hey June,
Good job on the once a day for the child in the hospital. I'm a chaplain
for an organization a one card is required but having been in the hospital
for over 5 months with 21 surgeries and months of rehab cards were fun for
me. Something else was the headset and books on tape. I was given a
Bible on tape and several musical recordings and books on tape from the
library to listen to while I was confined. Room on the side table was
limited because of the machines they were using to help me breath, eat and
have heart rhythm. Hope this helps you and your Sunday school child. God

8) Losing my Fruits of the Spirit...help
Hi All, I really enjoy reading this post. Alot of creative ideas are
generated by Sarah's ministry here. Anyways, I feel like I am losing my
Fruits of the Holy Spirit. I was once so incredibly happy at my church,
but over the past 9 months, I have been extremely angered, upset, and
disheartened. My pastor and I are at odds with one another. I decided I
want to further Christ's work and go into ministry for myself. I thought
my pastor would be extremely joyous over this announcement, but in return,
he has shown me he has no positive remarks for me at this time. Needless
to say, I have been challenged by him and some others to seek out other
churches, which I have been doing. I like the other churches where I have
attended, but none seem the same as my "home church". I truly miss by
sisters and brothers of the church. I want to do what is best for me and
what is pleasing to myself and God. I was once a coordinator for VBS,
youth groups, mommy and me group, and also a Sunday school teacher, and
now I have resigned from everything. I truly believe that God is
leading me in another direction and as a good disciple, I want to
completely be obedient to Him. Can anyone help me with my confusion at
this point??

9) Play: "The Clown"
I was in a play called "The Clown" about 25 years ago. the main character
was, obviously, a clown. There were 4 other characters wearing shirts with
the letters E V I L on each shirt.Through their interactions with the
Clown, they re-arranged the way they stood and became L I V E.
I'll look in some of our old files and see if I can find it, but I'm
doubtful.

10) Adult Sanctuary & Punishment
>As far as discipline goes, these days, about the only threat I can use
>with the kids is that they will have to go in the adult sanctuary.
Please,please, please do not use going to the adult sanctuary as a
punishment. Think about the message it sends. Being in the sanctuary and
worshipping God should be a joy, a wonder, something really special not a
punishment.
A couple of alternative ideas. If you have adults who are willing to sit
with the kids set up a utterly boring place. It could be a mat in a
hallway, it could be a chair in an office. The idea is that the child
would sit there with nothing, absolutely nothing to do for 10 minutes or
so (kinda like the naughty step).
If the children's parents are in church, simply send a message that their
children are misbehaving and would they come and sit with them.

11) Youth Involvement...Praise Program
Just read your email. I love to read them. I am not always able to reply,
but I do injoy them. You asked about a suggestion on your praise
program. What we do is let the kids have a role every quarter, such as
one can be in organizing the program for the qr. or every week. One can
be in charge of the group there in for the qr. one can be the song leader
for the qr. and so on. This also teaches the kids to work in a proper
manner for the Lord. Which you and your husband will over see it and make
all the teaching and supervisions as to where you dierct them in going.
This will help them get to see what you are trying to do for them. It
will also help them study more if they have to help give the lesson. I
hope I have help you insome way. You have helped so many by your own
faith. God bless you and husband as you try differnent thing to get the
attention of young people today.

12) Communion instruction
I don't have any suggestions to offer but I just wanted to encourage
you and thank you for the work you are about to start for your kids...I am
22 now, been taking communion for maybe 5 years or so and did not
understand why until last year...either i missed when they explained what
it was for or i wasn't taught why at all...but thank you for your
willingness to further your kids spiritual walk :)
