The Curse of Durgan's Reef ... A new novel for Christian teens.

"The Curse of Durgan's Reef" follows the adventures of two heroic teens as
they search for the cause of mysterious deaths on Australia’s dynamic
Great Barrier Reef.  The young heroes must rely on their faith in God to
confront dangerous sea creatures, violent storms, and murderous criminals.

Author Bruce Conn, a marine biologist, inspired by his own three teen
children, explores the hearts of his characters to illuminate the
Christian virtues that ultimately triumph over superstition, hatred and
fear.

Find it in the "Book Club - Novel Novels" section of our Bookstore at:

1) Outreach Ideas?

I'm looking for some crafts and lessons on teaching my children
about Outreach and helping others.  I want them to understand that we help
others not just with their spiritual hunger but their need of natural
food.  I want them to see that God has called us to take care of the ones
who can't take care of themselves.  If you could give me some ideas it
would be great or send me in the right direction.

Thank you.

Lana

2) Penpals?

Four kids in my Church have been pen pals with kids in South Africa for
the past 18 months.  The ministry we went through was Sunshine Kids Ministry,
in The Falls, So. Africa.  We shopped at Christmas both last year and this
year and send packages. But to our sorrow this year's gifts were never
picked up at the postal service in South Africa.  To make a long story
short, the kids want to find other pen pals to relate on their level.
They are in grades 4, 5, & 6 in Butner, NC.  If anyone has ideas or an
interest email me at  mdixon10@nc.rr.com

3) Spanish Materials

We are also working with children who speak Spanish, however, I know that
all of them are learning English in school so I try to do as much as
possible in English except with the preschoolers who only speak Spanish.
I think this could be a geat opportunity to help teach English.

If you can read Spanish (and it is an easy language to learn to read or to
find a volunteer -even a kid taking Spanish in school could help you do
this) and activities in English I think the Spanish speakers would really
grasp a lot and you don't have to worry about having to do as much in two
languages.  As for resources - check some of the materials put out by
different demoninations (Nazarene, Baptist, Lutheran - all have some
materials in Spanish)   or different publishers who have some resources in
Spanish.  I have not found a lot on the internet in Spanish.

4) Bible Song ABC Tune

I am unsure how to reply to messages posted in the email
newsletter.  Today there was a request for a simple New Testament
books song.  My eighth grade Sunday school teachers taught us the
books of the New Testament to the ABC song, and I have
remembered it ever since!

Sincerely,
Angie Oyer

5) Translation Warning

Hi,

Use a little caution when using any of the translation sites. I speak
passable Spanish and sometimes use these sites for spell-checkers. I was
trying to see if Holy Spirit (Espíritu Santo) had an accent mark and the
translation site gave me Alcohol Santo. Alcohol and espíritu are not
quite the same thing. Even if you don't speak Spanish you probably would
have caught that one but many mistakes are not so obvious.

My first choice for translation and spell checking are the Microsoft
Reader dictionaries. You can download free English-Spanish and
Spanish-English dictionaries from the Microsoft Reader website at
http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/default.asp. If you don't have
Reader on your computer you can also download it free of charge at the
same site.

Also in the for what it's worth category; children learn languages at a
phenomenal rate. We had a 5 year old Spanish speaking (only) foster
child who was placed with us because I speak Spanish. I also work full
time and so she had to go to daycare.  No one there spoke Spanish but
within a few days she was able to communicate her needs in English. When
she returned to her family 6 weeks later she was speaking English fairly
well.

God's Peace,

Carmie

6) VBS Alternative

Re. Used VBS Materials

> We are a very small church and we want to do avbs but we don't have funds

I would like to suggest contacting Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF). This
is a international organization that has began in 1937. You can find help
at www.cefonline.com - If there is a chapter in your area - they can set
up a f - r- e- e Bible School and even supply the workers for you.

The VBS program I like that they have is called a 5-Day Club. The kids
participate in songs, Bible Lesson, Missionary story and learn memory
verses. All that the host home needs to do is provide the place for 5 days
- 1 hour a day, invite the kids, and offer a simple snack for the kids
attending.

Individuals open their homes and CEF provides teen-college age students to
come and present a 1 hour program in your backyard, on your porch, in your
garage, etc. The young missionaries that run the program are just that -
missionaries. They go through training and must raise their own funds to
participate. They receive a wonderful opportunity to serve God and get a
taste of being a missionary and the blessing of introducing boys and girls
to Christ - even changing lives for eternity!

One neat thing about this is - if you are a small church - you will have
new contacts to invite to your church. The clubs do not have a minimum or
a
maximum number to attend. Families from our church have hosted with
anywhere from 3 to 26 attending. Funny thing is that the one meeting held
in a rural country side home had the most kids attend - 26 - under the age
of 6!

It is a great way to get started with a VBS for churches with a small
budget.

Joyfully Serving HIM,
<E><

9) Disciple Song Lyrics?

I know this was a long time ago, but in March of 2001 you listed a
disciple song, I was wondering if you had the song or lyrics I could see
or hear? Thanks!

10) Patriotic Program?

The children and young people in our church would like to have a patriotic
program the last Sunday night in June.  The main idea is the celebrate
Independence Day and our Christian Heritage.  We will have approx. 20
children and youth to participate.  We are thinking of using several
songs, but several of the young people do not sing.  Does anyone have any
ideas?

Thanks so much!!

11) Telephone Trivia - Keeping Interest

My daughter's teacher does something called "Telephone Trivia". This
requires the girls to call the teacher's answering machine to hear a Bible
question. She then leaves her answer on the machine. The next time she
returns to class she is given a piece of candy or small prize.

One thing that I've done in the past is to email my class during the week.
I'll ask a question pertaining to Scripture or the lesson coming up and
they'll have to do a little bit of reading to answer correctly. If they
bring their answer to class they receive a prize such as candy.
