Sin separates us--craft?

Dear Friends,

I'm the craft coordinator for VBS this year and I'm stumped for craft ideas
that help illustrate that sin separates us from God and that Jesus is the way to God. Any help would be appreciated. This craft is for VBS ages 4-12.
Can you help?

Thanks in advance,
Blessings from the little Minnesota farm,
Jenny

Construction/Building Theme

>>We are considering a construction theme for next year's camp sessions.
>Has anyone done a spiritual theme with this concept. <<

My Reply to Construction Theme:

We are just about to begin our VBS and are using a Habitat for Humanity
International curriculum. The construction metaphor is used to help
children experience Christian community, learn about the value of Christian
service and be introduced to the ministry of Habitat for Humanity
International. I don't know where it was purchased, but I imagine you could
contact Habitat in your area. Publisher is: Smyth & Helwys Publishing,
Inc., 6316 Peake Road, Macon, Georgia, 31210-3960. 1-800-747-3016.

Hope this helps,
Blessings,
Lynn C.

This site is a Godsend! i want to thank Sherri for the name of "Wee Sing

Classroom management

>> I don't need ideas about things to present, but I DO DO DO need ideas on basic >>teaching skills and classroom management.

I find myself in pretty much the same situation as you, Arlene. I teach in Children's Church and find myself without an assistant. Let me say that when I did have one, we used the idea that whoever was up teaching or leading would focus on only that and that the other would focus in managing or disciplining the class--in love, of course. But without an assistant, I found myself lacking in the discipline area as that is not my strong point anyhow. I have come to find that the Lord is truly working on me in that area. I think it really helps to set some very firm rules. Make sure they aren't all don'ts include some very fun dos. Make certain that the children understand the consequences of breaking the rules. You could divide the room in half and use the three strike rule per team. It's very important that you never get to the third strike. Another thing you could use to deter them from getting strikes is a caught being good kind of prize where you would reward them with a piece of candy or sticker or something for their obedience. Also, if you need some further help in the disciplining there is an article on www.kidology.org regarding disciplining with discipline. I liked it and thought that it was helpful.

HELP with older kids?

Hi. I like recieving this newsletter but don't find much in it for use with older kids. Our group is 15 - 17 yrs old and I'd love some neat ideas for this older bunch on any topic as we are rather new to this. Thanks for any and all help received.

Classroom management:

Hi Arlene:
You have a challenge having the 3rd graders with the 4th and 5th, but the first thing you need to explain to the class are the rules. You can even have them posted on your bulletin board. Never wait until the last minute to look at the lesson. Think about the lesson all week and get to your classroom in plenty of time to set up and relax. Try to TELL the story, not read it off a sheet a paper. We have the children sit on the floor and pretend they are sitting on the grass hearing the stories of Jesus. Try to make the lessons interesting. Reinforce with a craft, game or a video and once in a while you can read the story out of a book. Just remember that you will have good and bad Sunday's. The Sunday's that you go home thinking this lesson worked and the children really understood and had fun, is a wonderful feeling!

God bless,
Joni
