1) The Bible & Young Children

One of the reasons that we as educators in our church have gone to the
rotation way of Sunday school is because - Retention is the key to
learning.

We remember:

10% of what we READ
20% of what we HEAR
30% of what we SEE
50% of what we SEE and HEAR
70% of what we SAY
90% of what we SAY and DO
100% of what we EXPERIENCE

We have found that having the children experience the stories of the bible
is an awesome way of teaching the word to the kids. You might say that
it's difficult for the children - especially the very young. However, I
tend to disagree. The little ones, when kept involved in the classroom and
activities going on, really learn and retain the information we are trying
to teach them. Our workshops are a full hour long; but, we have many
things going on at the same time to keep their interest. This can range
from an Art Project with many different aspects, a game that allows them
to become a game piece, a cooking project that keeps their little hands
busy, a movie time where the movie is at their age level with popcorn to
boot. One story has come out about one of our 3 year olds that I need and
really want to share with all of you. Jake is a 3 year old who is full of
love and energy. Well, for about 5 weeks we covered the Lords Prayer with
the kids. On the 5th week his mom took me aside...
She said "I have to tell you what Jake did".
That week Jake had a doctors appointment and mom was there when the doctor
came into the room to see him. As the doctor walked in Jake asked the
doctor if it would be OK if they prayed before the doctor examined him. Of
course, his doctor (who is Jewish) said "Sure Jake .. Let's pray". Jake
proceeded to fold his hands (and reminded the doctor and his mom to) and
recited the entire Lord's Prayer! All this.. and only 3 years old!

Keeping the "little ones" involved and allowing them experience the bible
is an amazing way of bringing Jesus to the children.

3) Grandparents Day:  Time Capsule

For Grandparents Day have your students write on the back of index cards a
prayer request and a praise statement concerning their Grandparents. Then
have their Grandparents write a prayer request and a praise statement
concerning their grandchild and have them put them in a sort of time
capsule to be opened when the child becomes a parent or grandparent
themselves.Have them put them in a safe place so they can open them later.

4) Uplifting stories

When I did the bulletin for my church, I used the shortest stories from
various Chicken Soup for the Soul books--there are several different
volumes & they are easy to find at used bookstores, yard sales, etc. They
are trade paperback books. I also joined the Fellowship of Merry
Christians to get their "Joyful Noiseletter" which is filled with funny
stories, anecdotes, quips, quotes, and cartoons by various Christian
cartoonists (including the B.C. comic strip & Family Circus cartoons)--I
think they even have a website where you can get some of their jokes,
stories, cartoons without paying for a membership. I also liked to use
stories that came from our church's families, and encouraged them to email
me when their families had a funny happening. The family stories had a
really good extra effect of bonding us all together with laughter. I used
funny things my kids said, then would tell readers to email what their
children or grandchildren had said. I even us ed stories about things I
remembered happening in the church when I was a child--like how old Mrs.
Wood used to sing the bass part on the hymn "Church in the Wildwood."
People like to have their memories tickled as well as their funnybones! If
you haven't been around the church your whole life, ask some of the older
members what they remember most about the church & its members. A
newsletter can be a fantastic ministry. People often keep things like that
to uplift the spririts when they are feeling down, so you minister to them
over and over through it.

5) Peer Pressure?

I work with a girls group from my church and am trying to put together a
lesson on peer pressure for girls in grades1-5.Do you have any suggestions
for a game or something? I am very greatfull for your website,it is very
helpful to me with my youthgroup.

6) Christmas parade floats

Once we had a manger scene with the children (and a few adults) as stable
animals. Last year we pulled a boat with the theme
"Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." We used an old fishing net
and disciple costumes for the ones riding in the boat.
We won a prize for that float.

Respect & Honor For God

The God of the Old and New Testament is known by many names. These names
help us to understand his nature and reputation. They define him as
Protector, Defender, Friend, Advisor, Judge, and Savior to name just a
few. The Third Commandment says, "Do Not Misuse God’s Name". The goal of
"His Name Shall Be Called...", is to help you teach respect and honor for
God to the children in your ministry.

8) Rotation for Psalms?

Has anyone ever done a rotation model of the psalms of the Bible for
Sunday school? I am in charge of Pre-K through 5th grade and the rotation
models work best for us! Thanks for the help!

9) Potato Family Lesson?

I was looking on your web page for an object lesson.  I am a teacher and a
few years ago I had an object lesson on the Potato Family. It described
different family members such as "sweet potato" who exhibited good
character.  "commentator" did all the talking etc. Are you familiar with
this story?

10) How Do I Teach

Assuming you really do mean 40+, then check out the Seasons of the Spirit
material. They have a pack for adults which includes starting activities,
ideas for introducing the biblical material, activities/discussions for
responding to the material & a way of finishing. One of the  editors is a
pastor in Hawaii!!

11) Missionary projects ages 5-12

We are a United Methodist Church and our kids of all ages love to
participate in the Heifer Project.  If you are unfamiliar then go to
www.Heifer.com .  The kids love to pick out animals to purchase and they
really love to learn about the animals and how the animals help different
people in different parts of the world.

12) Tried and True Lessons?

looking for good resources for object lessons in general.  Especially
along the "Tried and True" lessons that worked really well.  Perhaps just
some stories about personal experiences to learn from as well.  My kids
really like the object lessons as it gives something to tie it all
together.  Now if I could just have them get the intended point all of the
time.....  :-)
