A Candy Cane at Christmas

Begin by reading Scripture story of Shepherds found in Luke 2:8-20.

Storyteller: "Do you know what a legend is?"
"A legend is a story handed down through generations, it is believed to have a historical basis although their is no proof. (a myth)"
"Well, I have a legend to tell you. It is about a candy maker from Indiana who wanted to invent a candy that was a witness to Christ."
"Does anyone know what kind of candy that could be?"
(let children yell out and answer)
"Yes that is right a Candy Cane"
"Lets examine the candy cane and see how it is a witness to Christ. In Matthew 16:18, God says..."

Actor #1: (Appears on stage with a big rock, puts it down and says...)
"...On this rock I will build my church"

( Actor 1 steps to back of stage and stays there till the end.)

Storyteller: "The candy cane was made a hard candy because the church is built on a solid rock and God's promises are a firm foundation. The candy maker then made the candy in the form of a..."

Actor #2: (Walks on stage with a Big letter J- shows it to everyone)

ALL: "LETTER J"

Storyteller: "That's right, the letter J. And of course the letter J is for Jesus."

Actor #2: (steps forward and says) "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

(steps back and stands next to Actor #1)

Storyteller: "If you turn the J upside down you have a..."

Actor #3: (walks on stage dressed as a shepherd with a walking staff [a Big White cane to later decorate with red stripes] actor 3 stays there on stage)

ALL: "A Staff"

Actor #3: "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep" (John 10:11).

(Actor 3 steps back and stands next to actor 2)

Storyteller: "That's right the candy cane also represents a staff with which the Good Shepherd reaches down to the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray"

"The candy maker made the cane white to represent Jesus' innocence. Jesus was perfect. He was tempted in every way, just as we are, yet he was still without sin.

Actor #4: (comes out on stage with a red sash [stripe] and puts it on the white cane and says...)
"This Large red stripe is for the blood Jesus shed for our sins on the cross"
(actor 4 steps back next to #3)

Storyteller: (Eph 1:7) "In Jesus we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace."

Actor #5: (Comes out on stage sucking a candy cane, making it look Dee-Licious.)

Storyteller: "The flavor of the cane is peppermint which is similar to hyssop. Hyssop is an aromatic plant from the mint family and it was used in the old testament for purification and sacrifice. Jesus is the pure lamb of God come to be a sacrifice for the sins of the world"

"SO Next Time you see a candy cane, hear the sermon it preaches..."

Actor #2: Steps to front of stage and says,
"Jesus Christ"
Actor #3: Steps forward, next to #2 and says,
"The Good Shepherd"
Actor #1: Steps next to #3 and says,
"Is the Sinless Rock of Ages"
Actor #4: Steps next to #1 and says,
"Who suffered and died for our sins."
