I Know Thee Well

Oh Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thoughts afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?" Psalms 139: 1-7 (KJV).

In my spirit I heard it as plain as day, "Cheryl, I know thee well." It wasn't an accusation, it was more a statement, that seemed to go straight to my soul and pierce me deeply. I have never forgotten it!

In hindsight I probably should have said, "Lord what do you mean you know me well?"

But at that moment, even if I had thought to ask that question, I was unable to speak. Thoughts of my life, before knowing Jesus Christ, came to mind. Like many of God's children, I do not have a past that was pure as the driven snow. When I came to faith at age 30, I was well acquainted with sin.

As I reflected on my past, the echoing effects from those five words, "Cheryl, I Know Thee Well" made me feel like a child who was not only caught with her hand in the cookie jar, but had frosting on my face and cookie crumbs all over the floor.

I suddenly found myself naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to give an account (Hebrews 4:13).

I couldn't hide; where does one go to escape from God? (Psalms 139:7)

How could I deny it? God does indeed know me well. With those words I was weighed in the balance and found wanting (Daniel 5:27). I was totally at the Lord's mercy.

Finally, when I was able to speak, I said, "Yes Lord, what you say is true, you do know me well, but by your grace I have received Jesus Christ as my personal Savior."

"His blood now covers me, old things have passed away, and behold l am new (II Corinthians 5:17). I am now therefore, perfect in your sight." A sense of peace then came over me.

Of course God already knew that, but that experience was used as a reminder to me of just how important my salvation is. Later, I couldn't help but rejoice, because I noticed He called me by name. I could not and would not want to face God without having been washed in the precious blood of Jesus. Thank God I have been saved, and will never have to be judged for my sins. "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteous of God in him" (II Corinthians 5:21).

Jesus says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no one comes to the Father, but by me" (John 14:6).

He also says, "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

The best thing I have ever done in my life was to pray a prayer something like this: "Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner and cannot save myself. I ask you Lord to come into my life. I turn from my sin and I choose to follow after you. I believe in your death, your burial, and your resurrection. Please wash away my sins with the blood you shed at Calvary. I receive you now into my life as Savior and Lord. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus name I pray. Amen."

If you too have done this, then rejoice. Your name has been written in the Lamb's Book of Life (Revelation 21:27).

If you have not had this opportunity, why not take a few minutes now, and silently ask Jesus to come into your life and forgive you of your sins? Remember, Jesus promises that all who come to him, He will in no wise cast out (John 6:37).

God wants us to be found in Him, not having our own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith (Philippians 3:9).

Prayer: Lord, may we all be found in Christ, because truly, you know us well! Amen.
