What Kind of Seed Are You?

Who's Seed Are You?

"His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness" 2 Peter 1:3.

On a recent bicycle ride to the beach I was mulling over today's Bible verse. Peddling along I spotted a perfectly formed, miniature coconut seed lying in the middle of the path. I stopped to pick it up. Holding it, I thought of its potential. God had created it with all the appropriate DNA; it contained everything it needed to grow and mature into a beautiful coconut palm tree. I marveled as I realized the seed illustrated the verse I had been contemplating! God's children have also been given everything we need in Christ for life and godliness.

Godliness is the outward evidence of God's Spirit working in and through our lives. Yet, the verse says godliness comes through our knowledge of him. And Titus 1:1 says, "it is . . .the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness." But does this mean only astute Bible students can be godly? Absolutely not! Because when we trust in Jesus, the Bible says we are given the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). And Colossians 2:3 says, "In him [Jesus] are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." This doesn't mean, however, we abandon learning about our faith or growing up in Christ. On the contrary, we are told to study to show ourselves approved by God, workers who do not need to be ashamed (2 Timothy 2:15).

The coconut seed presents a warning too. It had become disconnected from its life source, most likely as a result of heavy winds. It would not become a tree. However, even though God's children may be blown and tossed about by the winds of life, we cannot be disconnected from our Life Source! The Bible says, "If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise" (Galatians 3:29). Even so, if we do not nurture our faith, studying to show ourselves approved by God, then we won't grow and mature to become the beautiful people God intended for our lives!

Here's the question, "What kind of seed are you, or better still, who's seed are you?"

Prayer
Dear Father God, thank you for being my Source of Life and godliness, and for making known the path of life through your Spirit and Word. Help me grow to maturity and fill me with joy as I dwell in your presence. Amen.
