"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal" Matthew 6:19-20
(ESV).
The Edible Treasure Chest food devotion is a perfect add-on activity for "Lesson Seven: Treasures in Heaven,
Don't Worry," from our Sermon on the Mount Bible lessons for kids.
What You Need: Unfrosted cupcakes; chocolate frosting; Twizzlers; chocolate candy coins or other gold foil wrapped candies; and small candies such as M&Ms, candy necklaces, Skittles, etc.; plates, napkins, plastic knives, clean safe scissors.
What you do: Place the cupcake on the plate. Use the scissors to cut the Twizzlers in half widthwise and then lengthwise. Carefully cut off the "crown," the top of the cupcake, to form the lid. (The picture shows the paper removed from the bottom half and then iced. However, you can leave the paper on the bottom so the children can hold the cupcake without making too much of a mess. But that's up to you!) Place one or two coins
on the cupcake, then put on the lid. Use the plastic knife to apply the icing to
the top, and then decorate it using the Twizzlers to line the top, and small candies to finish the look of a treasure chest.
Point out to kids, as cute as our treasure chests are, if we don't eat them right away, they too will "rot." Jesus wants us to remember that the things we do for God's kingdom here on earth have eternal value. When we tell others about Jesus, by sharing
God's Word, praying for them, being loving, kind, and generous, using what we have to help
others—giving our time and talents—doing to others as you would have them do to you, we store up heavenly treasures!
Pray and eat!
