Props Needed: One girl willing to allow you to use her long ponytail or three pieces of cord,
preferably three different colors. (Either one will make the point, and either one brings to the sermon illustration something unique.) If you're using the cord, tie all three together at one end, forming a knot, so they are hooked together.
Preparation: Braid the ponytail, or the three pieces of cord. The finished braid should be at least a foot long so it can be shown to your audience.
Sermon
(Say:) Hey kids! Who can tell me what the term Triune God means? (Listen for answers.)
Triune means three-in-one. It can be quite hard to understand that God is
triune; he is three in one. (Have the girl with the ponytail come forward, or
choose a child to stand next to you and hold the knot of the braided cord.)
(Say:) How many ponytails (or cords), do I have here? One, right?
(Unbraid the ponytail, or cord).
(Say:) Now how many do I have? Three, right?
(Hold up the ponytail or cord. They should be unbraided but held together so they appear as one.
Have someone begin reading the following Scripture* references.)
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been
made" John 1:1-3.
(Allow the ponytail or cord to hang loose to display the three separated parts. Hold up one of the strands while someone reads the following Scripture reference.)
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us . . . " John
1:14.
(Begin braiding the ponytail or cord.)
"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were
created. . . all things were created by him and for him. . . " Colossians
1:15-16.
(Hold up the braided part of the ponytail or cord, and read the following verse.)
"For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him" Colossians
1:15-19.
(Show another one of the loose strands of the ponytail, or cord, and read the following reference.)
"If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever - the Spirit of
truth. . . all this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all
things" John 14:15-26.
(Finish braiding the ponytail or cord while someone reads the following verse.)
"For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form"
Colossians 2:9.
"I and the Father are one" John 10:30.
(Hold up the finished braid.)
(Say:) Hopefully this illustration will help you understand how our God is three-in-one. However, until we go to be with God in Heaven, we will never fully understand his power,
majesty, and his triune nature!
Say, and then have children repeat, Psalm 48:1,"Great is the Lord and most worthy of
praise. . . "
